Aurora Couple Embarks on 700 km Walk Around Prince Edward Island to Combat Food Insecurity

George (73) and Erlinda Biondic (85) of Aurora, Ontario, are proving that age is no obstacle to making a difference. The ultra-running couple, already known in their community for their compassion and endurance, are preparing for their biggest challenge yet: a 700-kilometre endurance walk around the entire coastline of Prince Edward Island to raise funds and awareness for food banks.

The Biondics first captured public attention in 2022 when they walked over 90 kilometres from Toronto to Barrie to mark George’s 70th birthday—raising an impressive $11,000 for the Aurora Food Pantry. Now, three years later, they’re going even bigger.

Let’s go big this time. No wimping out. We’ll never regret doing good,” said Erlinda, who celebrated her 85th birthday with the decision to take on this bold journey.

From June 20 to July 23, 2025, George and Erlinda will walk around Prince Edward Island to support both the Aurora Food Pantry and food banks across PEI, shining a spotlight on the growing issue of food insecurity in Canada.

Although we live in an affluent society—at one time Aurora had the highest per capita income in Canada—there are people who have fallen on hard times through no fault of their own,” George explained. Many economical factors have contributed to community members facing food insecurity. “It could be your neighbour, silent out of embarrassment. Without food, a child can’t learn and develop; an adult can’t work and be productive. Can the rest of us sit idly and do nothing?

In addition to supporting local food initiatives, the Biondics hope to inspire others—especially seniors—to stay active. George emphasizes that movement is essential not only for physical health but also for mental well-being. Reports show anxiety and depression are on the rise. Regular physical activity can improve mental health at any age.

George and Erlinda Biondic are living proof that it’s never too late to dream big, walk far, and give back.
